Lake Bunyonyi is located in south western Uganda between Kisoro and Kabale. It is also close to the border of Rwanda which is about 1 to 2 hours. The lake is 900 m in depth and the deepest lake in Uganda and was formed as a result of volcanic formations. And it’s sometimes called home of the 29 islands, it’s also 25 km long and 7 meters wide annexed by hills that are about 2000 to 2500 meters high.
Bunyonyi is a local word that means small birds of the area, it is home to over 200 bird species such as grey crown crane, herons, African harrier hawk and egrets.
It also features aquatic life like cray fish, mud fish and mirror carp and their predators, some islands have antelopes and zebras.etc
How to get to Lake Bunyonyi
By road the drive is 410 km from Kampala to Lake Bunyonyi kabala on a 7 hour drive and 1 to 2 hours from Rwanda.
Activities in Lake Bunyonyi
Boat cruise / canoeing
The boat cruise or canoe experience gives you a chance to explore Lake Bunyonyi to some of its islands. And while on this boat safari you shall see a number of birds at the shores and around Lake Bunyonyi, plantation and beautiful rolling land scape, the shores and surrounding communities.
Swimming
Swimming as an interesting activity that we can explore while at Lake Bunyonyi. The lake is fresh and free from bilharzia. It is a great opportunity to swim in the deepest lake in Uganda and this will require you to have experience in swimming.
Bird Watching
Lake Bunyonyi is a good birding haven for birders and its home over 200 bird species that you can look out for on this safari. Apart from the shores nyombi swamp which can be explored on a boat cruise. Birds include African fish eagle, king fisher and egrets among others.
Nature walks and Hiking
Exploring the areas around Lake Bunyonyi on foot is one way to exercise fitness as you enjoy nature and the melody and whispers of birds. This walk you shall walk around some hills and at the shores of Lake Bunyonyi and you will enjoy the beautiful scenery of plantation.
The walk takes you on a hike to some of the hills around Lake Bunyonyi offering scenic views of the lake Bunyonyi.
Batwa cultural visit
Lake Bunyonyi trips explore more into the batwa culture
The batwa will tale stories and take us through their traditions, ways of living not forgetting the traditional cultural performances. On the walk to the batwa, bakora cave may be explored not forgetting the Abaheesi (traditional black smith).
The batwa leaved in Echuya forest and in the islands that can be reached out to on a boat cruise where we see a number of activities of the batwa.
Other activities include cycling, zip lining, gorilla trekking in Bwindi among others.
